mom
As our population ages, many
people are renovating to make
their homes more comfortable

W
hen Dave and Krista Heron bought their home in
maple ridge, B.C., back in 2013, the couple always
knew Krista's elderly mom would be moving in. it was
an opportunity for her to give back to her mother, Autumn, who
could then afford to stop working and enjoy the retirement life.
"She took care of me all these years; now it's my turn," Krista
tells our House magazine. But the couple's single-family home on
a quiet residential street wasn't set up for her elderly mother. the
house was decades old and needed to be completely renovated to
make room for a separate suite.
So in the fall of 2016, the couple set about a major renovation
that would take a couple of months to complete and allow for
Autumn to move in. the plan was to demolish part of the house
and add a 380-square foot secondary suite. the Herons needed
money to do the renovation, so they used the equity in their
